captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning, well come welcome to "today" on a monday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> good morning, i'm savannah guthrie. ofgs in officials in syria and iran are hinting at possible retaliation to the israeli air strikes, there have been two in just 48 hours. >> the goal of the raid, stopping weapons and missiles from reaching the hands of hezbollah militants. let's get right to nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel in turkey near the syrian border. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the israeli government and military haven't officially acknowledged the raids, and israel almost never confirms but

u.s. officials say it was the israelis and the strength and precision of these attacks leave little doubt. israel, this morning, remains calm, not expecting a direct military response from syria, but on alert. its iron dome missile interceptor system deployed, precautions in case syria or perhaps more likely, it's its ally lebanon, hezbollah, respond to a pre-dawn raid in damascus on sunday, the second in 48 hours. but analysts say president bashar al assad is in no position to fight with israel, the strongest military in the middle east. >> assad is busy with survival. he has no time nor even i think even the thinking, the thought of taking care of israel. >> reporter: israel doesn't seem to want an all-out war with syria either, stressing its goal isn't to topple president assad,

worrying what could follow him, but to stop weapons transfers to hezbollah. israeli officials say the targets of the latest raids were precision iranian-made rockets bound for hezbollah. but now that israel has acted, with or without admitting it, there is an increased risk the middle east's deadliest civil war could become a regional one as well. israel is now reportedly trying to ease tensions with the syrian government, stressing it doesn't want to get involved in syria's civil war but doesn't want to suffer from it either. savannah? >> richard engel along the border in turkey this morning, thank you. we're following new developments this morning in the boston bombing investigation. the suspect's uncle is now in massachusetts to arrange for tamerlan tsarnaev's burial. nbc's katy terr is in boston following developments. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the uncle will be asked to have the body relieved.

saying he is not a threat to the public. this as investigators continue their search over the weekend. from a search in the woods outside of u. mass-dartmouth, to the cambridge apartment of tamerlan tsarnaev, agents are looking for any signs of where the brothers built or tested their explosives. >> don't bury him here. >> reporter: in worcester, protesters outside this funeral parlor. the burial is at a stand still, as four cemeteries have refused to bury the alleged bomber. >> we have to bury this guy, whatever it is, whoever it is, in this country we bury people. can't separate sins from sinners, i can't pick and choose. >> reporter: tamerlan's parents prefer their son's body be buried in the u.s. as soon as possible. per muslim custom. sunday, uncle ruslan tsarni said he should be buried here because it was his home. >> he lived in america. he grew up here the last ten

years and resided in cambridge. >> reporter: curiosity over katherine russell is growing, tamerlan's wife. the 24-year-old has been staying at her parents' house in rhode island with her 3-year-old daughter. agents previously found material from al qaeda "inspire" magazine on her computer but officials say unknown whether it was downloaded by her, tamerlan, or dzhokhar. over the weekend a surprise appearance by a survivor at the boston bruins game. he waved a flag on the ice as a sellout home crowd cheered him on. they are floating the idea of giving each of the families of those killed $1 million each. back in boston. the first of dzhokhar's three

college friends appeared in court and the other two are also accused of obstructing justice, on expired visa. they will appear on may 14th. >> katy tur in boston, thank you very much. >> natalie is on assignment. we will check in with her later on. tamron hall is here with more, including a car fire out in california. >> a limo was taking a new bride and group of friends out for an evening of celebration. this morning, as police investigate the driver who managed to escape is opening up about what happened. newlywed narisa fojas was celebrating with eight of her friends when tragedy struck. the white stretch limousine carrying the women to a bridal shower suddenly caught fire while heading over the san francisco bay on this bridge. >> this has to be one of the worst fatalities i've witnessed in the years i've been with the office. >> the driver, orville brown, said he stopped after one of the passengers yelled smoke!

but the car was quickly engulfed in plams. flames. those who survived climbed through the partition of the front of the vehicle. >> it happened so fast, within maybe two minutes from us stopping, maybe 90 seconds, it was engulfed in flames. we were all just in shock, scared, crying, frustrated and i just reach out to the families, you know, wish that we could have done more. >> fojas was a registered nurse who worked in fresno, according to coworkers. the other four victims have not been identified. investigators say they will try to determine what caused the fire. witnesses say the 1999 model limousine did not appear to collide with anything before going up in flames. >> we'll be looking at the safety of the vehicle depending on where the fire started. the fire department will be looking into something that happened in the vehicle. >> reporter: the california highway patrol says brown was not charged or cited. the limousine company released a statement saying, in part, limo

stop inc. will do everything possible to investigate and assist authorities in determining the cause of this fire. the four women who managed to escape were transported to local hospitals and treated for burns and smoke inhalation. two are listed in critical but stable condition this morning. now to wall street, kayla tausche is at the new york stock exchange. we are expecting another record high for this week. it was quite a friday. >> it was. it could be another record week after touching the historic highs last week. the dow at 15,000, the s&p at 1600, two highest points on record, fueling the rally a positive report on jobs growth. some caution employee wages are still lagging. cities creating the most jobs have reason to cheer, home prices are rising faster. austin, houston, denver and baton rouge among cities where residential real estate at or near all-time highs. tamron? >> kayla, thank you. u.s. officials are grappling with a spreading hunger strike at a prison at guantanamo bay as

republican said sunday, the white house has yet to detail what it would do with the detainees. >> there's been no coherent plan presented to the congress. >> reporter: as the hunger strike has spread, military officials have rushed medical personnel to the prison and moved detainees from communal quarters into solitary confinement, just as they were held when guantanamo was held 11 years ago. a fiery plane crash at a madrid air show sunday stunned spectators. i want to warn you, the video you might find disturbing. the jet crashed into a hangar and erupted into a ball of fire, you see the reaction from people there. the 35-year-old pilot died of the injuries he sustained in that terrible accident. the 2013 profile and courage award goes to former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. she received the award on sunday at the john f. kennedy library to reduce gun violence.

accepting the award, giffords expressed her disappointment that congress failed to pass gun legislation saying "i believe we all have courage inside. i just wish there was more courage in congress." the show must go on and justin beb bieber knows he is no exception. he was tackled by a man who rushed the stage during a concert in dubai knocking over bieber's baby grand piano in the process. it was a combo of security and the guy knocking over the piano. incredibly, justin bieber unfazed, finished the song while all of this is going on and returned for two more. impressive there. >> not on the piano. >> i don't know how much a baby piano weighs but the fact, it was like a papier-mache piano! >> that fan could have had anything in his hands so that's a bad moment for security right there.

happy to shop online and i know that the fact there's no sales tax is one big plus that keeps them with us. >> reporter: a new internet sales tax would pump billions of dollars into cash-strapped states. only five states do not have sales tax. the big political push is coming from retailers with brick and mortar stores that must collect sales tax. that means their shoppers pay more. >> it will give everybody a level playing field so retailers can compete on price, quality, service, and not have the government interfering. >> reporter: online giant amazon supports the internet sales tax and with warehouses all over, amazon is already required to collect some taxes, but ebay, which lives only on the web, is fighting hard to stop it. >> instead of just having to file your taxes in one place or get audited by one tax regime, you face that from every state in the country, and that's a significant, new burden for small business. >> reporter: sellers like sarah

which court orders you don't comply with, and this is not a game. >> reporter: the judge is a native of orlando, his father among the city's first black police officers. perry became orange county's first african-american chief judge. during the casey trial, there was a premium on seats in his courtroom from around the world, hundreds lined up every day for a must have ticket. the scene outside in sharp contrast to the order inside the courtroom. for many, this was a reality show, not the hallowed halls of justice. >> i've been watching. i taped every episode. >> our families at disney world but this was more exciting to are hee. >> reporter: because of facebook and twitter the casey anthony trial was dubbed the nation's first social media trial, and on twitter, judge belvin perry was nicknamed the velvet hammer. for "today," kerry sanders, nbc news.

>> and judge belvin perry jr. is with us now. judge perry good morning, good to see you. >> good morning, savannah. >> when you were in the middle of it did you realize what a sensation all of this was? >> i had no earthly idea it would command the attention it did worldwide. it was truly a fantastic experience. >> well you had a vantage point very few have, in particular on the defendant, casey anthony. i wonder what your impression was of her, in front of the jury and other times that the rest of us didn't see. >> there were two sides to casey, the side before the jury where she portrayed the role of a mother who had lost a child, someone who was wrongfully accused, and then you could notice the change and transformation in her when the jury went out. she was very commanding, she took charge of different things and you could see sometime her scolding her attorneys. >> did you think she was manipulative? >> very manipulative.

>> you almost suggest she was rather two-faced or putting on an act in front of the jury. >> there's always two sides to cases, there's the public persona she wanted the jury to see and there was that side she showed when the jury was not there. >> there was a moment when her lawyers came to her to discuss potentially taking a plea deal, pleading to a lesser charge, and she had quite a reaction to that. can you tell us about it? >> i will never forget that day, one saturday morning before we were about to begin our session, the lawyers wanted time to discuss a possible plea to aggravated manslaughter with casey. they went back in the holding cell and of course the waiting area for me was by the holding cell, and all of a sudden you heard shouting coming from the holding cell, some four-letter words coming from the holding cell, and she was quite upset, so upset that one counselor suggested that she was incompetent to proceed. >> did you think there was

sufficient evidence to convict her in this case? >> one of the things i had to do is decide whether or not to send this case to a jury. yes, there was sufficient evidence to sustain a verdict of first-degree murder in this case. >> what did you think when you opened the envelope and read that verdict? >> surprise, shock, disbelief. >> i think you told me you read it twice. >> i just wanted to be sure i was reading what i was reading. >> when you say that, i don't want to put you on the spot too much, did you think the prosecutors had proved her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt? >> yes, i thought they had proved a great case but you got to realize this was a circumstantial evidence case. and all the defense had to do was create that reasonable doubt and that's what they did. >> you told me before you thought this ultimately was a close case on the evidence because of some of the deficiencies in the evidence, and when you have a close case sometimes the lawyering really

matters. what did you think of the lawyering in this case? >> well, the state had better lawyers, but mr. baez was very personable and he came across as someone that you would like. it's like somebody trying to sell a used car. who are you going to buy it from? the most likeable salesperson. >> do you think it was good for the justice system that there were cameras in the court, that this was such a widely followed case? >> well in florida we've always had cameras and i think people need to know how their justice system works and that's the only way it can work. >> you look at somebody like casey anthony, she's been acquitted, free under the law and she lives in hiding, she can't go anywhere, apparently can't make a living. in your mind has justice been served to her? >> well, justice has been served in the sense that the jury has spoken but justice will finally be served one day by the judge of judges, and she's going to have to live with this and deal

struggle has looked like for you. you said you were held hostage by food. >> it looks like alcoholism, it looks like drug addiction and i go there in the book and look at the growing amount of science behind the addiction to salt, sugar and fat. have you heard those words before lately? there has been a lot of science in books that have come out that are starting to show there may be an actual process to becoming obese that has nothing to do with the lack of discipline, nothing to do with being a slob, nothing to do with the judgments that we put on people who are obe obese, and they have everything to do with being addicted to certain foods that are surrounded, we are surrounded with. >> this went on for decades for you. you talked about having a cycle of bingeing and purging, even exercise bulimia. >> everything, and you know, i still struggled, writing this book i fell off the wagon a few times so pretty extreme behavior. >> what does that mean, falling off the wagon?

>> well, i tell the story what happened when i was writing the book, and actually i write in the book how i think ambien is a truth serum. i used to take it and one night i went downstairs and literally ate one of those large jars of nutella starting with the spoon ending up with it on my arms and my husband is standing there going what is going on but it was that kind of demon coming out in the middle of the night, it was disgusting. >> these are issues you cared about for a long time and we have more insight as to why. there came a time when you approached one of your best girlfriends, diane, to talk about her issues with weight. that led to this book. >> we have known each other 15 years, we'd shared everything, talked about her relationships, our jobs. we even had a baby together because she helped me deliver my second child because my husband was out of town. we've shared everything and diane over the course of our

relationship had gained 100 pounds and we never talked about it. so we had this incredible conversation where i went there, and i said, you know, i'm scared for you. you're fat. i even used the word obese, where she looks completely shocked but she then heard my story and the things that i did to myself, to be this thin or to be much thinner, because we ended up challenging each other. she said you ought to write a book on this. i said you ought to join me and you need to lose 75 pounds by the time this book is written and i'm going to figure out how to gain ten and be okay with it, so she is today 75 pounds lighter, i'm ten pounds heavier, sort of okay with it, still working on it, and went from a size two to a size six. we're both healthier. >> you both look fabulous. the results speak for themselves. >> yes, but it was an interesting issue, we discovered that even her at her weight and me at mine we did the same things with food. we were drawn to the same things

we're back at 8:38, when you're training to become a doctor how do you learn the art of bedside manner? nbc's chief medical editor dr. nancy snyderman is here with a look at an innovative program. >> i hear from medical school professors all the time say students come in eager and impassioned about helping others and they leave cynical and harsh doctors. one doctor in arizona is trying to change that by offering a first of its kind class for young medical students in a place you just wouldn't expect. >> nice to meet you. >> reporter: dr. alan hamilton isn't your typical neurosurgeon. after mentoring young physicians for 25 years he's come to believe that the needed medicine is not another technological advance but a return to the basic principle of communication so instead of just teaching

students in a hospital, he brings some here. >> breathe and relax. >> to a corral. how does the professor of neurosurgery end up with two horses? >> i moved out here specifically to do neurosurgery by day and horses by night. we're going to find a place to introduce ourselves where it's safe. >> reporter: he's pioneered a unique class for first year medical students at the university of arizona medical center teaching every kind of skill they would need to approach a patient but in this class, the patient is a horse. >> i put my arm around him like this so the whole time even when i go through his blind spot he knows where i am. the whole thing started one day, i was in a hurry, we had a case in the emergency department, i was delayed getting to clinic and we burst into this room we were in a hurry and this woman screamed when we walked into the room because we came in so fast, i just remember thinking to myself, boy, i never would have done that, if that was a horse. >> reporter: a lesson this

seasoned surgeon wishes he had learned at an earlier stage in his career, and because of that, he's determined to make an impact on the young doctors of tomorrow. >> i'm studying books instead of focusing on patient care and this is one class i could do as an elective to learn how to better interact with animals and learn how to use my body language to interact with patients. >> now he's making eye contact with you because you approached him in a very sensitive way. >> it's a lot like a patient. >> yes. >> they even learn the art of giving immunizations. >> pull back out, rub it, nicely done. >> reporter: hamilton wants to instill a different kind of knowledge in america's next generation of doctors, helping them to overcome fear and build confidence. do you think this kind of program can improve the doctor/patient relationship? >> absolutely. but i'll tell you probably more important is it saves doctors. our salvation is going to be to go back to what really makes us

"living the good long life." welcome back. good to see you. four meals, pretty simple shopping list, and you reuse a couple of ingredients, which is always good. >> the most important thing, when you're thinking about living the good long life, which is the title of my new book, you have to think about the real food you're going to serve your family and serve yourself, and this is four simple things. one night can be a delicious omelet filled with great vegetables. >> you like eggs for dinner. >> you want to make an omelet? >> most people think of eggs for breakfast, but you don't mind it for dinner, which i like. >> i like them for dinner, and because it's so healthy with all kinds of beautiful vegetables. you can add cheddar cheese. you can add a healthy bacon. you can add tomatoes, parsley. and you just make a pretty omelet -- and i don't know if we'll have time to finish all these beautiful things. you're very good. look at you. >> i lovemaking omelets. raging debate in my house. do you add water to eggs to

lighten it up a little bit? >> no. all these eggs are so good. they're my eggs. all these vegetables were picked in my greenhouse. >> i've been there. i've seen the hen house as well. >> you can make a really tasty omelet. that has to cook a little bit longer. another night my meal. >> salmon? >> and cook enough salmon. two to three minutes per side to cook a beautiful piece of salmon. >> and salmon is really healthy for you, but you're also adding bull gur. >> bulgur wheat, which is very, very high in protein but low fat. lots of great healthy digestive fiber, and you use scallion, lemon juice, salt and pepper in your bulgur, and you have a delicious salad, and the salmon that's leftover is going to be made into a pasta. >> on thursday. let's talk about wednesday first. you go that way, and i'll meet you in the middle. >> on wednesday, you're using the beautiful salad greens that you wash and keep. this is how i keep my salad greens. >> how long do they stay in

here? >> three days, four days. >> without browning around the edges? >> do it this way. you wash them, spin dry them very well, put a piece of paper towelling in a zip-lock. >> not a damp paper towel. just a dry paper towel. >> you want to exclude the water. then grill a very thinly sliced chicken breast, salt, pepper, make your salad dressing in a jar, which is dijon mustard, vinegar, shallot. so delicious. i love these. >> how long can you keep viniagrette once you put it in a jar like that? >> i'd say about six days is fine. salt, pepper. and then you have a beautiful salad all over the top. >> and a lot of people might not find that filling enough. so you serve it with these crackers and a little hummus. >> hummus and cheddar cheese leftover from your omelet because you've got enough. this is what it looks like. look how beautiful when it's sliced. >> hi, how are you? >> with some sprouts and some beautiful radish. >> 30 seconds left. tell me how to reuse the salmon

we're going to be talking to george lopez. >> we'll check back with you. take two the guest of honor mika brzezinski, the new book is called "obsessed: america's food addiction and my own." mika, we know the numbers, two in three americans overweight or obese, a huge problem. you go to any playground in america you can see the childhood obesity is a problem. you wrote this from a personal point of view. >> it was inspired out of a conversation with a friend of mine who over the course of 15 years of knowing her went up to 256 pounds and i confronted her about that, and then she confronted me back about how thin i was, and i began to pour out my stories, involves years of having eating disorders and running and exercising and being on this cycle of trying to stay thin and doing it at terrible cost. we found out we had a lot in common. >> you talk about being a young woman and overeating, scarfing

down burgers, all of this in an attempt to deal with pain? what was it? >> there's a lot of reasons why a lot of women do it and they all have different reasons. >> what was your reason? >> well, i personally think it's the only thing that loved me back or i felt did. i blamed this on no one, but i think what links us and even obese people and very skinny women and those who have food problems is the science that i see growing behind it and that is the salt, the sugar and the fat put in most of the food we eat, developing this brain reward and we look at studies that looked at brain scans and the pleasure center of the brain would light up when they would eat these foods laced in all these ingredients that are i say addictive. it would be the same type of lighting up as the brain would to cocaine, and so i link this to addiction, and then we look at obesity, her obesity and i challenged her, write the book with me, i'll pay you to lose weight, to write the book with

me and lose weight. she has lost, my friend diane smith, who is an emmy award winning journalist who gained this weight over all the years, 75 pounds. >> there she is. >> you talk about the addiction and i think about people who are struggling to lose weight and they lose a couple of pounds but get discouraged. it's almost as if the game is rigged against you. >> it is rigged against you. that's what i find everyone says you're so judgmental to people who are obese. what this book does is stop that stuff. it stops, it cuts it because if you look at the science behind how we eat and you look at all the factors that play into obesity i don't think we look at this enough and we talked to a lot of very high profile people who deal with this problem and also the discrimination against them. chris christie is insulted every day, the governor of new jersey, for being obese. you think he wants to live that way? do you think my friend diane wanted to be the way she was and

still struggles not to be today? it's something more, and it's something that i think science will prove to be an addiction just as bad as alcoholism, drugs or cigarettes. >> and a lot of high profile people speak out about their struggles. >> there are solutions, too, real ones. >> sound the alarm. take three, binkis and bacteria. there's a study in the journal "pediatrics" finds if you suck your child's pacifier clean as a parent you may be helping your kids avoid exczema and asthma. 65% reported sucking the pacifier to clean it, stockily reduced when they were examined at 18 months of age. we talked to some of our producers before who don't have kids and say that's disgusting. those of us who have kids it's ten times a day, right back into
